One year ago (almost to the day) we experienced a low blood sugar of 29 and I hoped to never ever see that number again.
Well today I was working when Little Dude came down and without a saying a word (he knows he will get in big trouble if he says anything while I am on the phones) he wrote on my white board next to me that said.....
Princess (well her real name) 29
I put my phone on mute and asked him if that we her blood sugar. He said it was but daddy was taking care of it.
I had a break after that call so I ran upstairs to see what happened. Apparently after her breakfast the Princess got into the bath. When she had gotten out of the bath she yelled to her daddy to come get her dressed. He was in the middle of something so he asked her if she could do it herself. I guess she yelled back to him that she couldn't and she needed him to test her. He said he went into her room and she was laying on the floor naked, still soaking wet, and not really moving. He tested her and she was at 29.
I hate lows like this. They are so scary! It took her a little while to start feeling better, but the image of her laying naked on the floor not able to do anything is haunting my brain. The what ifs won't stop. I have kept a close eye on her all day since her day has been filled with lows.
The little turkey knows it too so guess what she did this evening? We were headed out somewhere and I was trying to round up the kids. I couldn't find her. Her coat and shoes were still out but she was no where to be found. I started to panic that she was passed out somewhere and started to yell her name and looking all over for her. When I walked into the hallway she opened the closet and came out. She thought she was being tricky to play a prank on mommy. I laughed, but I had to tell her how I really was worried about her. Silly girl.

Wow! How scary! I can picture her laying on the floor, fresh out of the bath too. I cannot imagine the panic you must have felt, and your husband too. I am glad she was ok and told her daddy to test her!
Kids definitely like to play tricks like that! Zane will do that sometimes too. He will get really quiet and I will call him a few times before he yells back, very mad at me and says "Mommy, I don't want to talk right now!"
I have to explain to him that it scares me to not know where he is. :)
That gave me chills...and made my heart skip a beat...
Great job, guys. So happy to hear she's back to playing pranks and being a normal kiddo!!!!!
I'm so sorry you had to deal with lows today. That sounds SO scary. I am so happy though that she was able to ask for help. I can't wait until my little buy who looks just like your little man :-)
can verbalize his highs and lows.
Great job you two for being such wonderful parents!!
Lows have been on my mind a lot lately too. A little worry seems to always sit with me these days...I'm so sorry that she had to go through that! Totally scary and miserable! :(
It just makes me sick to my stomach. I hate what these little ones go through and am amazed by their ability to move on and stay so positive! Great job- so glad she's feeling better!
Oh Shannon I'm sorry. That just made me sad. ((HUGS))
How scary... I love how they move on so quickly. I wish I could do that. Glad she's feeling better.
HOLY COW!!! Sooooo scary!! I'm glad shes ok :)
Just an FYI for next time...Our Endo told us and the Pink Panther book explains it too....
"Taking a bath/shower soon after taking insulin lowers blood sugar. The blood vessels in the skin dilate from the warm/hot water and cause insulin to be rapidly absorbed. It's wise to wait at least 90 minutes to take a bath/shower after taking insulin. However it is only necessary to wait 10-15 minutes after being in hot water to take the insulin."
Hope this helps!! I didn't know this until we had the lows after bathtime and the CDE asked me about it and we haven't had them since.
That's scary. Like everyone else said, I think it says a lot that she was playing tricks on mommy. She is a normal little girl. It doesn't make it easy on you and your husband to have to worry for her.
We've seen that number once.....don't wanna ever see it again. Glad things got right quickly!
We've had to smack her around a little when she's fallen asleep and won't answer us in the car. She gets so mad, but we panic and she's usually fine, but when she won't answer, you panic.
Even when they're just playing like Princess did, they have no idea what goes on in our heads about them being ok. What a little stinker having fun with you! :)
The low sounds very scary. I would have thought the challenge of this season is highs. It's nice that she's able to verbalize how she's feeling. What a help.
Oh that is so scary!! Poor thing!
Wow, I am glad you caught it. How scary.
I just launched a new blog called D-Mom Blog, which I hope is a resource to other parents of diabetic children. I hope to develop relationships with more parents.
(I've included you in my blogroll already.)
